Adopting an entrepreneurial mindset is a skill, not a talent.

Sure, there are traits we’re born with and environmental factors that shape us, but just like muscles, if you lift enough iron, you’ll eventually get stronger.

“You learn more in failure than you ever do in success.’‘

- Jay Z

But what is the ‘lifting weights’ version of building an entrepreneurial mind?

As complex as becoming an entrepreneur is, getting there is simple. Here’s how:

  1. Find someone you want to be like. Ask them questions about their journey and what it took for them to get there. Emulate that.
  2. Read to solve your problems. Struggling to find a solution? Chances are, the answers are out there. Search for the book that has the solution.
  3. Adopt a do, then learn mindset. Here’s the typical consensus when it comes to formal education. Study for an exam, take the test and assess the results. The business world is ruthless, when you’re committing to a new venture, immediate action is often required. Next time you go out to achieve something, try the ‘Do, then learn.’ method instead. Take the test, assess the results and study to improve.
  4. Become a professional team builder. Being entrepreneurial requires taking responsibility, which can also, unfortunately, translate into taking excessive control. To really reach new heights, you need to build a team of advisors around you that can help you achieve your goals. Remember, championships aren’t won alone.
  5. Defend your reputation — Your reputation is your identity, it’s how people perceive you, if it isn’t nurtured, it can have catastrophic consequences. You must dig deep, assess your values, ethics and beliefs and ensure you stay within that scope, your success depends on it.
